How Hydroxycut Hardcore Works
- Hydroxycut Hardcore is a supplement in the popular Muscletech line of Hydroxycut weight loss products. The manufacturers of Hydroxycut Hardcore claim that this formula is the result of a decade of physicians' research, and that the product results in rapid loss of body fat--to be exact, they claim that people using Hydroxycut Hardcore lose an average of 7.9 percent of their body fat with consistent use.
- The product is said to work by attacking the body's fat-burning processes on multiple fronts. Essentially, Hydroxycut Hardcore aims to increase the amount of fat-burning hormones in the body while also altering the body's signals to shut off production of this hormone.
- First, Hydroxycut Hardcore increases the level of norepinephrine in the body, supposedly by up to 40 percent. Norepinephrine stimulates the beta-receptors on fat cells within the body, forcing these cells to release their contents. Second, the supplement speeds up production of an agent called cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which signals the cells to begin breaking down the fat released by norepinephrine. Third, Hydroxycut Hardcore aims to inhibit the alpha-receptors that would normally work to equalize the beta-receptors: thus, the body continues to release and burn fat. Fourth, it inhibits the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), which, like the alpha-receptors, works to stabilize the body's burning of fat. Fifth, the product claims to speed up thermogenesis in muscle cells by activating uncoupling proteins in the mitochondria of muscle fiber: by the work of these proteins, fat is burned off as heat.
- Hydroxycut Hardcore is marketed to serious bodybuilders. One official blurb recommends it for the "real, red blooded, train-till-you-puke, eat-egg whites-till-you're-blue-in-the face bodybuilder." However, Hydroxycut is also popular among average individuals looking to drop weight, and a formulation this intense could lead to serious side effects. Hydroxycut has not been evaluated by the FDA, and it has been linked to serious health problems. In fact, after several cases of severe liver damage in Hydroxycut users, the entire Hydroxycut line was recalled in 2009, including Hydroxycut Hardcore. Whether the product works at all also is up for debate. Many user reviews suggest that Hydroxycut Hardcore has little to no positive effect on health or fitness.
